Exploring the beauty of Cellular Division in these unique science earrings. Microscopically, cellular division is the basis for life’s growth and creation. Macroscopically, divisions evolve and affect every aspect of our lives. The flow and expansion of life teems with excitement in every cellular flourish.
Organically fused in sterling silver, these Cellular Division science earrings celebrate spontaneous creation and the irrepressible unfolding of life. Hand forged, fused and riveted, these science earrings dangle and sway, reflecting light accented with a beautiful black patina.
These earrings measure 2.5 inches from the top of the ear wire, and are approximately 0.5 inches wide.
Note from the Artist
I made these science earrings entirely by hand. I’m fascinated with the textures created by combining fusing, granulation, and forging. Each piece on my workbench is special, but with Cellular Division I was inspired by the spontaneous growth of life at a microscopic level.
In today’s pandemic age, cellular photography is everywhere. Anitbodies war with virus on the news and social media. Cell structure and evolution is inherently compelling. As an artist, what really captures my attention is how that microscopic architecture is writ large in the macroscopic sections of our lives. Each of us bounded by strictures of fear and illness, yet bonding together over common goals.
Probably one of the most rewarding things to create is handmade texture- and the texture in Cellular Division is no exception. I always approach the creation of texture a bit like a mad scientist. The alchemy of fire, force, and metal is unpredictable and enthralling. Each hammer blow shapes the metal in a new direction. Each pass of a torch runs the risk of artistic implosion, where the metal could sink into a formless mass once more. The thrill of creation is echoed in the rush of artistic freedom with every moment, until the final texture is achieved.
I hope you enjoy Cellular Division.
