Note from the Artist
I made these forged sterling silver and 22k gold earrings entirely by hand. I’m fascinated with the textures created by combining fusing, and forging. Each piece on my workbench is special, but with Gold Spiculum I was inspired by the intricate forms found in nature.
A spiculum is a curved tubular segment found in many creatures and plants throughout the world. Bursting forth in every environment imaginable, life grows in a myriad of shapes and sizes. From the tiniest cellular organism to the mightiest redwood tree, the multitude of varying forms is fascinating. Linear lines of forged textures draw the eye, while the gorgeous sheen of 22k gold elegantly reflects the light. These contemporary fused sterling silver and 22k gold earrings dance and sway with every movement.
Probably one of the most rewarding things to create is handmade texture- and the forged textures in Gold Spiculum is no exception. I always approach the creation of texture a bit like a mad scientist. The alchemy of fire, force, and metal is unpredictable and enthralling. Each hammer blow shapes the metal in a new direction. Each pass of a torch runs the risk of artistic implosion, where the metal could sink into a formless mass once more. The thrill of creation is echoed in the rush of artistic freedom with every moment, until the final texture is achieved.
I hope you enjoy Gold Spiculum.
